Hello and welcome to Year 1! I am Mrs Owen the Year 1 teacher and I am delighted to be teaching Year 1 alongside our team which includes Mrs Yau, Mrs Kinsey, Mrs Whittaker and Miss Cook.
Our class is made up of 25 young enthusiasts who are all ready to continue their journey through school. We are looking forward to building relationships, learning new things and rising to the challenges in Year 1. We are a very supportive team who believe in working with parents to support the child. We have a dojo system which enables you to keep in touch on a daily basis and view and celebrate your child's achievements. If you ever have any questions, or simply want an update on how your child is getting on you can send us a message via dojo (which will be monitored in school hours), contact our school reception or speak to us on the door at the beginning/ end of the school day.
- Reading- We encourage as much reading as possible; fiction and non-fiction, as well as poetry. Please set aside as much time as you can to read with your child. Please do this in different ways, listen to your child, share the story together and let them listen to you read. Share their school book and their favourite books and enjoy this time together. Please make a comment with a page number and signature every time your child reads at home. If you have shared a different book please write this in and let us know.
- Homework- Homework is given out in homework books on Friday’s and should be returned by the following Wednesday. Please encourage and help your child to complete their homework and leave a comment and/or signature. Children will have the opportunity each week to be rewarded with the homework Dojo when they complete it.
- PE- This will take place on Monday morning (children are to come in their PE kit and bring their uniform to change into) and Wednesday afternoon. Children will take their kit home on Wednesday ready for Monday morning.
This year we will be following the Floppy Phonics Programme. Our individual reading books link to our scheme and with your support we aim to enable all our children to become confident, fluent and comprehensive readers who love to immerse themselves in books. Children should be around 90% fluent to enable them to enjoy reading and comprehend the information they are reading. Our Phonics Programme runs for 40 minutes every morning and this includes guided reading. In the Summer Term children will take part in a Phonics Screening Check. This check is statutory and includes a list of 40 real and nonsense words that children must read. If you would like more information on this please click here.
Phonics Play is a fun interactive programme with some free games, that allow children to practise their phonic knowledge from home. Please find the link below:
