Holy Family And St Michael's Catholic Primary School

Numeracy

At Holy Family and St Michael’s we strive to ensure all students realise their potential. We aim to teach children the skills to become fluent and confident mathematicians as we believe that numeracy skills are fundamental life skills. We do this through high quality teaching and learning, by giving children daily opportunities to develop their fluency, reasoning and problem solving skills in a range of contexts. We support the life-long learning of our children and understand that all teachers and support staff have a role to play in supporting children’s progress in numeracy.

Numeracy is a proficiency which is developed mainly in mathematics but also in other subjects. It is more than an ability to do basic arithmetic. It involves developing confidence and competence with numbers and measures. It requires understanding of the number system, a repertoire of mathematical techniques and an inclination and ability to solve quantitative or spatial problems in a range of contexts. Numeracy also demands understanding of the ways in which data is gathered by counting and measuring and presented in graphs, diagrams, charts and tables.

We aim to deliver a consistent approach in the teaching of numeracy to ensure that all children are equipped with secure written and mental maths skills for the future.

Aims

  • To deliver the National Curriculum 2014 in purposeful ways to equip children with skills for life.
  • To ensure all children are able to calculate accurately and efficiently.
  • To introduce a range of calculation methods, both mental and written.
  • To ensure children, teachers and parents use the same calculation methods.
  • To develop the use of mathematical language and understanding.
  • To enable children to build confidence to tackle a variety of mathematical problems.
